Shred Fest Donations Benefit Light at the Inn

First National Bank & Trust’s May 14 Shred Fest- a free event for the community to safely and securely destroy unused documents, also accepted free-will donations.  In addition to helping members of the community destroy over 11,220 lbs. of documents, the donations raised are also going to help local people in need at the Light at the Inn, the Dickinson County faith-based homeless and emergency shelter referral service.

In 2020 and into 2021, Light at the Inn began operating on a year-round basis, serving those experiencing homelessness by working as the Emergency After-Hours/Weekend Voucher agency for Dickinson and Iron County.  This service is subsidized by the Community Action Agency of Marquette (CAAM), and as a result, Light at the Inn is now able to assist families with children.

Since just January through April of this year, Light at the Inn has assisted 46 families, including 5 children, with hotel vouchers for 1 to 3 nights.  They have also provided food, gas and phone cards, bus tickets, cab fare, and other services, such as providing transportation and a moving team to move a family into permanent housing.

“We really appreciate the donation to help our mission in keeping people from being homeless,” said Light at the Inn Treasurer and retired First National Bank employee Sandy Meier.  “The great part of Light at the Inn partnering with CAAM, is the people we are housing must phone them the next day, where they will then evaluate the person’s situation and can connect them with agencies that can help them find permanent housing.”
